A Carer’s Insight

Posted on

July is Good Care Month, which acknowledges the importance of care workers and recognises just how integral the care and support sector is to our society. It’s also a time to reflect on the consequences of the shortage of carers: many vulnerable people are left without the correct support, leading to a decline in the quality of life.

Good Care Month allows us to highlight how carers can have an increasingly positive impact on individuals and thereby encourages more people to join our industry.

We sat down with Nikki, a Field Care Supervisor, and chatted about life as a Carer and her journey with ND Care and Support.

Nikki joined ND Care and Support a little over a year ago. She sought change and wanted a career in which she could make a difference. When asked what Nikki enjoys about caring, she stated, “I enjoy making a difference and bettering someone’s day, whether it’s helping with full personal care or just making them a cup of tea and having a chat.” She also goes on to say how rewarding a career in care can be, especially when patients are appreciative and kind. “I hope that when I get to a point where I need care, I will be able to bond with my carers and show them the same appreciation many of our service users show me.”

While Nikki is passionate about care and her career in it, she does acknowledge that, like most jobs, there can be times of hardship within the industry. She relates to situations in which the service user is in a particularly negative mindset due to being unwell or dealing with their struggles, which results in them acting slightly rude or aggressive. When it comes to tackling these issues, Nikki suggests the following, “You just need to focus on trying to understand and listen to what they have to say or how they are feeling. Make them feel heard and try to help lift their spirits.”

What makes a good carer? Nikki believes that as a carer, you should always look to put yourself in the service user’s shoes and ensure you treat everyone how you would like to be treated yourself. By doing this, you are creating a positive experience, allowing trust to form and building a good bond.

Since joining ND Care and Support, Nikki has made tremendous strides, progressing from domiciliary care to Field Care Supervisor. Her job now consists of ensuring good quality of care is delivered and making improvements where necessary.

“Since joining ND Care and Support, I’ve never looked back. I love my work and enjoy helping make people’s days a little brighter. This is a company I want to progress with, and I have already started to work my way up.”

Here at ND Care and Support, we’re always looking for caring, compassionate, and committed care workers to join our teams and support those working their way up the career ladder. All of our managers have worked their way up to management level from joining us as a carer.
